It is not news to anyone that 2016 has been a horrid year. It seems that every day another great has passed on. Sadly this Monday is no different as we have lost a South African sporting legend- Gugu Zulu.
For those of you who do not know, Gugu Zulu was a South African racing driver who won numerous local racing titles throughout the last decade. He is probably most well known to us layman as the presenter on the SABC motoring show Car Torque. He also stole many hearts as a contestant on the SABC2’s reality dance competition- Strictly Come Dancing. Proving that men need much more than mere athleticism to make it on the dance floor.
Affectionately known as the Fastest Brother in Africa, this Sowetan-born superstar was always meant for greatness. Gugu began his racing career in 1999 after graduating from the Isondo Racing academy. One year later he shocked the racing world by winning the Vodacom Isondo Sports 2000 National championship. In 2001, under the wing of racing legend Sarel Van Der Merwe, Gugu was given second seat in the inaugural Sasol Steam Team. From there Gugu racked up awards left, right and centre.
Gugu sadly lost his life during the Trek4Mandela expedition up Mount Kilimanjaro. As of this moment details of Gugu’s death are still sketchy. Though what we do know for sure is that Gugu, passionate about charity work, was doing this expedition in the hopes of raising enough funds to ensure that 350 000 girls would not miss a day of school due to menstrual challenges.
Gugu is survived by his wife, Letshego and their daughter Lelethu.
Wishing his family and friends all the strength during this time.
